South America, Indonesia, Thailand and India are cheap places to travel because the food and living costs are very low if you keep out of big cities.

Another thing to consider is what you want out of your gap year travelling experience. Do you want to volunteer? Do you want to learn a language? Or are you looking to just meet other people from all over the world and have a good time? Whatever you’re after will determine where the best places to travel are. If you want to learn a foreign language, South America is a great place to spend a few months, because the entire continent, excluding Brazil, speaks Spanish so this gives you plenty of time to learn the language.
